What Clothing to Pack for Uganda

For most family trips to Uganda, practical and comfortable clothing works best. Lightweight fabrics are ideal for the warm climate, but it’s also helpful to bring layers for cooler mornings, evenings, rainy weather, or higher elevation areas.

Outside of larger city settings, Uganda tends to be more modest culturally, especially in villages and rural communities. Women will generally feel most comfortable wearing skirts or dresses below the knee, or lightweight pants. While tourists can dress more casually in many areas, modest clothing is often appreciated and can help you blend in more comfortably during local visits.

Adults

  • Lightweight t-shirts and tops
  • Comfortable skirts, dresses, pants, or longer shorts
  • Light sweater or hoodie
  • Rain jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes + sandals
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Swimsuit if staying somewhere with a pool or planning activities like rafting the Nile

Kids

  • Lightweight play clothes
  • Extra outfits for messy days
  • Sandals + closed-toe shoes
  • Pajamas
  • Light jacket or hoodie
  • Sun hats
  • Swimsuits for pools, water activities, or rafting excursions

Laundry services are common at many hotels and lodges, so you usually don’t need to pack as much clothing as you think.

Health & Hygiene Essentials

A few health and hygiene items can make a huge difference during travel days.

Helpful Items to Pack

  • Motion sickness medicine
  • Kids pain/fever medicine
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sanitizing wipes
  • Bandaids / small first aid kit
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Electrolyte packets
  • Travel tissues

If you or your children are sensitive to mosquito bites, lightweight long sleeves and pants for evenings can also be helpful. Please be sure to consult with a travel clinic to determine which if any vaccinations or medications you might need prior to traveling to Uganda.

Safari & Outdoor Packing Tips

If your Uganda trip includes safaris or national parks:

  • neutral-colored clothing works best
  • early mornings can feel chilly
  • binoculars are fun for kids to use on safari
  • pack lightweight layers
  • dust and mud-friendly shoes are helpful

For gorilla trekking or more adventurous excursions, tour companies usually provide specific recommendations ahead of time.

Final Thoughts

Traveling to Uganda with kids may feel intimidating at first, but it can also become one of the most rewarding family experiences you’ll ever have. The key is not packing more — it’s packing thoughtfully.

Comfortable clothing, simple travel systems, organized carry-ons, and a few engaging activities for kids can make travel days feel so much smoother for the entire family.

With a little preparation, your family can spend less time stressing about logistics and more time enjoying the beauty, culture, and adventure that Uganda has to offer.

Safe travels!
