We’re the Alotos — a family of five building a life between cultures in Uganda.
I’m Emily, my husband is David, and together we’re raising our three children, Marisha, Zeke, and Eli, while learning what it means to create home in a place that is both familiar and new.
A year ago, we traded life in the United States for a new chapter in Uganda — returning to the country where David grew up and embracing a slower, simpler, and more connected way of life.
Here, our days are filled with the ordinary moments that make up a life: school mornings, meals around the table, gardening, caring for our fish farm, exploring Uganda, navigating new experiences, and learning from the people and culture around us.
We don’t share a perfect life. We share a real one.
The joyful moments. The challenging moments. The unexpected lessons. The days that remind us that ordinary moments can become extraordinary.
A Little About Us
I spent more than 15 years working in the humanitarian sector, supporting individuals and communities through some challenging moments. That experience shaped the way I see the world — with curiosity, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the people and places that make each community unique.
After more than a decade away, our family returned to Uganda to build a new chapter together. While this country has always been part of our family story through David, returning as a family of five has brought its own joys, challenges, and lessons.
Through Isn’t Life Extraordinary, we share what we’re learning along the way — from the practical realities of raising children across cultures to exploring Uganda, creating a home, and finding beauty in everyday moments.
