What My Garden Taught Me About Nurturing
Last July, I planted a garden behind our house in the village. It was exciting to watch tiny seeds become sprouts, and sprouts become something that could nourish our family.
For months, I watered my garden every few days — sometimes daily when the plants needed extra care. In return, the garden gave me fresh peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and beets.
But not everything thrived.
No matter how much I watered them, my cucumbers and lettuce struggled. The sun was simply too strong, and eventually they wilted away.
As I reflected on my garden, I realized something: I had treated every plant the same, but every plant had different needs.
And isn’t that true of the people we love?
We often assume that the same kind of care, encouragement, or support will work for everyone.
But people, like plants, are unique. We each have different needs, different environments where we flourish, and different ways we need to be nurtured.
If we don’t take the time to learn someone’s “care instructions” — to listen, observe, and understand what they need — we may unknowingly be asking them to thrive in an environment that was never meant for them.
My cucumbers and lettuce didn’t fail because I didn’t care for them.
They simply needed something different.
And maybe the people we love are the same.

Pause & Reflect
Who in your life might need a different kind of care than the one you’ve been trying to give?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
