Tea Time Is Never Just About Tea

Tea Time Is Never Just About Tea
One of my favorite things about living in Uganda is that tea is rarely just… tea.
At first, I thought people simply enjoyed drinking it more often than I was used to. But over time, I realized that tea isn’t really the point.
The people are.
Need to talk through a new business idea? Let’s have tea.
Welcoming someone into your home? Put the kettle on.
Meeting with neighbors for Bible study or prayer? There will be tea.
Stopping by to discuss a piece of land? Tea.
The plumber has come to fix something around the house? Before long, you’re both sitting together with a warm cup in your hands.
Tea has a remarkable way of slowing everyone down just enough to make room for conversation. It’s an invitation to linger instead of rushing off to the next thing. It says, You matter more than my schedule.
I’ve come to love that.
In a world that often celebrates efficiency and multitasking, there’s something refreshing about choosing connection instead. Some of the best conversations don’t happen because they were carefully planned. They happen because someone took the time to boil water, pour a cup, and stay a little longer.
Tea, I’ve learned, is how communities are strengthened, friendships are deepened, and families stay connected—one cup at a time.
Maybe that’s why tea in Uganda always seems to taste just a little bit better.
It was never just about the tea.

Pause & Reflect
When was the last time you lingered long enough for an ordinary conversation to become something meaningful?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
