Easy Homemade Chicken Parmesan
Ingredients
Method
- If your chicken breasts are thick, carefully slice them in half horizontally to create thinner cutlets. Pat dry and season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Place the flour in one shallow bowl.
- In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
- In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
- Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat well with the breadcrumb mixture.
- Heat about ¼ inch of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook each piece for about 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown. The chicken does not need to be fully cooked through at this stage since it will finish baking.
- Transfer the chicken to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Spread a small amount of marinara sauce in the bottom of a baking dish.
- Arrange the chicken pieces on top.
- Spoon marinara sauce over each piece, then top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the cheese is bubbly and lightly golden.
- If you’d like extra browning, broil for the last 2–3 minutes.
Emily’s Notes
Chicken Parmesan is one of those meals that feels a little extra special while still being completely doable at home. Crispy chicken, flavorful tomato sauce, and plenty of melted cheese — it’s the kind of combination that almost always brings everyone running to the table.
This recipe is especially meaningful to our family because the chicken we used when we made this for the first time in Uganda came from the very first batch of chickens we raised on our farm here. There is something incredibly special about sitting down to a meal made with food that was part of the journey from the very beginning — watching it grow, caring for it, and eventually sharing it around our family table.
I love recipes like this because they remind me that food is about so much more than the finished dish. It’s about the stories behind the ingredients, the work that goes into creating them, and the people we gather with when the meal is ready.
In our home, this is one of those meals that everyone looks forward to. It’s comforting, filling, and a beautiful reminder that extraordinary moments are often found in ordinary days.
Whether you serve it over pasta, alongside a fresh salad, or with homemade bread to soak up the extra sauce, I hope this chicken parmesan becomes a favorite around your table too.
