What Uganda Taught Me About Parenting

Parenting in Uganda has reminded me that raising children was never meant to be a solo journey.

Here, children are surrounded by community. Neighbors, relatives, and friends look out for one another’s children — offering a helping hand, sharing meals, and stepping in when needed.

There is a beautiful understanding that children belong not only to their parents, but to the wider community that loves and supports them.

Motherhood can feel isolating in so many places, but here I have found the opposite.

Motherhood creates connection. It draws people together.

There is a lighter feeling that comes with knowing you do not have to carry every moment alone.

There are always people willing to help carry the load, celebrate your children, and remind you that you are surrounded by others on the journey.

Pause & Reflect

Who has been part of your village, and how might you become part of someone else’s?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

A Little About Me

I’m Emily — a wife, mom of three, humanitarian professional, and storyteller sharing our family’s journey of building a life across cultures

After more than a decade away, my family and I returned to Uganda, where we’re learning to embrace a slower pace of life, discover beauty in everyday moments, and create a home in a place that is both familiar and new.

Through Isn’t Life Extraordinary, I share reflections on family, faith, travel, food, and the lessons I’m learning along the way.
