What Slowing Down Taught Me About Well-Being
“Slow down” is advice we often hear, but it wasn’t until I moved to Uganda that I truly understood what it meant.
For the past decade, I have managed some chronic health challenges. I don’t talk about them often, but I’ve learned something important about my own body: stress has a way of making everything harder.
In the U.S., life often felt full and fast-paced. Even when I loved the work I was doing and the life we were building, the constant demands and pressures sometimes took a toll. Stress became something I carried, and my body often reminded me when the load was too heavy.
Since moving to Uganda, something unexpected has happened. I’ve had a year without the flare-ups I had grown accustomed to, and with my doctor’s guidance, I am even beginning the process of reducing my medication.
I don’t think there is one simple explanation.
But I do think there is something powerful about a slower pace of life, nourishing food, less stress, and making room for simple moments of joy.
Sitting outside with my family. Cooking from scratch.
Watching my children grow. Building community.
Appreciating the little things.
Maybe slowing down was exactly what my body needed all along.
Maybe it was what my heart needed too.

Pause & Reflect
What might your mind, body, or soul be trying to tell you if you slowed down long enough to listen?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
