Western Uganda feels completely different from anywhere else in the country. Towering mountains, crater lakes, tea plantations, misty forests, and some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife all come together here in a way that’s hard to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself.

Whether you’re dreaming of tracking gorillas in Bwindi, cruising through Queen Elizabeth National Park, hiking around Fort Portal, or relaxing beside Lake Bunyonyi, western Uganda is full of adventures that you’ll remember long after you return home.

Planning a trip to Western Uganda?

Western Uganda has some of the country’s most spectacular scenery, but it’s also one of the regions where travel times can be longer than they look on the map. Building in extra time allows you to enjoy the journey just as much as the destination.

A few things we’ve learned:

  • Gorilla permits need to be booked well in advance if you plan to visit Bwindi.
  • Roads through the mountains are beautiful but winding—allow extra travel time.
  • Pack layers. Mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, especially around Fort Portal and Lake Bunyonyi.
  • Don’t try to squeeze everything into one trip. Western Uganda deserves time to slow down and explore.
